Amritsar Golden Temple was built during the leadership of the 5th Guru, Arjan Dev during the later half of 16th century AD. It is also known as the Harmandir Sahib (Temple of God). This beautiful shrine is an unique blend of both Hindu and Muslim architecture. In 18th century during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Amritsar Golden Temple was elaborately ornamented with marble pillars, gold gilding and precious stones.
Inside the Amritsar Golden Temple, on a jewel encrusted platform, the 'Adi Granth Sahib' is worshipped. The temple is situated in the middle of the 'Amrit Sarovar' or the Lake of Amrit ( necter of immortality). It is believed that whoever takes a dip in the holy water gets purified of all sins and his or her soul attains salvation. The water is also believed to possess miraculous power to cure diseases.
