Andhra Pradesh Districts

The southern state of Andhra Pradesh is rich in natural resources. The state is bound in the north by states of Orissa and Chatisgarh. On the west of Andhra Pradesh lies Maharashtra and Karnataka and on the south lies the state of Tamil Nadu.

The state of Andhra Pradesh in divided into several districts. The following are the districts of Andhra Pradesh:

Adilabad:

Formed in the year 1905, this district lies in the northern part of Andhra Pradesh. It shares its borders with Maharashtra state. The rivers Godavari, Penganga, Pranahita and Kadem flow through the district.

Nizamabad:

This place was earlier called Indrapuri or Indur. The chief cities of this region are Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Bodhan and Armur. There are several pilgrimage places in this region.

Karimnagar:

The district of Karimnagar in Andhra Pradesh is famous for it handicrafts. It shares its borders with the state of Madhya Pradesh. The rivers Godavari and Maneru flow through it.

Medak:

This district flourished under the rule of Satavahana, Vishnu Kumdin, Western Chalukya, Rastakuta, Yadhava, Kakathiya, Qutub Shahi and Nizam kings. Evidence of the Roman presence in this district is also found. Sangareddy is the district headquarters and is located 28 kilometers from Medak.

Warangal:

The headquaters of the state is in the city of Warangal. Warangal shares its districts with Khammam, Nalgonda, Nalgonda, Medak, Karimnagar districts. The districts specialty lies in the forts and temples that are there in abundance.

Ranga Reddy:

Named after the freedom fighter Ranga Reddy, this district was earlier a part of Hyderabad and gained its independent status of a district in 1978. The specialty of this district are grapes which have acquired international fame. The district headquarters are in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad:

Hyderabad is the capital of Andhra Pradesh. The city along with its twin, Secundreabad sa an old history that dates back to 400 years. The city is the smallest and the densest city of Andhra Pradesh. It is known worldwide for its prospering software revolution.

Nalgonda:

This district shares its boundaries with Krishna and Khammam districts in the east, Mahabubnagar and Guntur districts in the south, Mahaboobnagar and Hyderabad districts in the West and Medak and Warangal districts in the north. The Krishna, Musi and Dindi rivers flow through the district. The district's Nizam Sugar Factory is famous in the state.

Mahabubnagar:

Tis district has bamboo forests that are used in the production of paper. The chief cities of the district are Nagarkurnool, Vanaparthi Mahabubnagar and Gadwal.

Khammam:

The bordering districts of Khammam are East Godavari, Warangal, Nalgonda and Krishna districts. It shares is borders with the state of Madhya Pradesh also. The Khammam fort is a speciality of the district.

Kurnool:

The important cities of this district are Kurnool, Nandyala, Adhoni, Athmakur and Emmiganur. The district is famous for it hydro power Project on river Krishna at Srisailam.

Anantapur:

The district has a forest cover of 10%. This district often suffers from Drought. The Government has approved this district as one of the four industrial development centers.

Chittoor :

The east and south of the district of Chittoor is bound by Tamil Nadu state. The west is bound with the state of Karnataka. Cuddapah and Anantapur districts occupy the north of the region. The headquarters of this district is at Tirupati.

Cuddapah:

This district was earlier called the Hiranya State. The forest region of this district yields timber and rare red sandalwood that are exported to other countries.

Nellore:

The district of Nellore is positioned by the Bay of Bengal. The major cities of the district are Nellore, Gudur, Naidupeta, Kavali and Sullurpeta. The Pennar, Kandaleru, Swarnamukhi and Upputeru rivers flow through the district.

Prakasam:

Bound on one side by the Bay of Bengal, this district has its headquarters at Ongole. The rivers Gundlakamma and Paleru water the district. The district derives its name from Andhra Kesari Sri. Tanguturi Prakasam Punthulu.

Guntur:

The chief cities of Guntur districts are Guntur, Bapatla, Tenali, Narasaraopeta and Ponnur. The district is reputed for the Durgistone craft. Agriculture is the primary occupation of the people of the district.

Krishna:

The district is named after the river Krishna that flows through the district. Earlier it was known as the Machilipatnam district. Its name changed to the present one in 1859. The headquarters of the district is in Machilipatnam.

West Godavari:

This district shares its boundaries with East Godavari district in the East and North, Krishna district and Bay of Bengal in the South and Krishna and Khammam districts in the West. The headquarters of the district is at Eluru. Incandescent is a major industry of this region.

East Godavari:

To the east and south of the district lies Bay of Bengal. Khammam district lies in the West and Vishakapatnam district in the North. The rivers Godavari, Eleru, Pampa, and Sabari flow through the region. The headquarters of the district is at Kakinada.

Visakhapatnam:

The chief cities of this districts are Vishakapatnam, Anakapally, Bhimunipatnam and Narsipatnam. Visakhapatnam is the headquarters of the district. The old university headquarters of Andhra University lies in this city.

Vizianagaram:

The headquarters of this district lies in Vizianagaram city. The district is famed for its precision in making the musical instrument called 'Veena'.

Srikakulam:

The district borders are Bay of Bengal in the East, Vijayanagaram district in the South and Orissa state borders in the West and North. The district headquarters are at Srikakulam. The district is famous for its production of jute.
