The literacy rate of Andhra Pradesh is 60.5% as per Census 2001. 70.3% of the total male population and 50.4% of the female population are literate. The schools in Andhra Pradesh operate under the Andhra Pradesh Board of Secondary Education, and Andhra Pradesh Board of Intermediate Education.
Andhra Pradesh government wants to ensure a minimum of eight years of education for all by 2010, irrespective of gender and class distinction. In an effort to meet the target projects like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan which means universal education, Education Guarantee Centre, Alternate School, Back-to-School Camp are frequently undertaken. The focus is on quality elementary education with special emphasis on education for life.
To ensure easy access to high quality education for underprivileged rural children language improvement program, computer education, alternative schooling and model schools are in process. Efforts are to bring infrastructure, and academic standards in the rural schools at par with the urban well-run schools. Access to advanced content and teaching methodology, increase in enrollment and decrease in drop out rates are been seriously looked into.
