Urs of Hazrat Ali


The Urs of Hazrat Ali is held in the Kohir region of Andhra Pradesh every year. The popular festival of the Urs is held in the dargah of the saint in the town of Kohir. The followers of the Muslim religion gather here to immortalize the memory of the saint Hazrat Ali every year.

The town of Kohir is situated 12 kilometers away from Zahirabad. The town lies at a distance of 120 kilometers from Hyderabad. The town was originally known by the name of Omkaram. It was later renamed Ahankarapattanam. The town adapted the name of Kohir during the rule of the Muslims in the region of Andhra Pradesh. The town has the famous dargah of the saint Hazrat Ali situated here.

The festivity or the Urs of Hazrat Ali is observed annually in the dargah. The celebrations are held during the months of October and November. The followers of Islam religion believe the Urs to be the death anniversary of the saint that also marks his symbolic union with God. The Muslims gather at Kohir from all over the state of Andhra Pradesh to celebrate the union. The Urs of hazrat Ali records the presence of almost 5000 devotees every year.

The Urs of Hazrat Ali in Andhra Pradesh is one of its kind in India. It is one of the popular festivals of the state. Although celebrated in the small town of Kohir, the Urs of Hazrat Ali is comparable with the Urs held at Ajmer every year.
