Medak Church, Medak

Medak Church stands gloriously as the main landmark of Medak City, in Andhra Pradesh, amidst sylvan surroundings. Built on an extensive scale in pure white granite, this gothic style structure is one of the largest and one of the best churches in the country. Constructed by C.W.Posnett, the magnificent Medak church stands on a sprawling 1000 acres of land in Ghusnabad. The church with its immense beauty was sanctified on 25th December 1924 and took ten years to be completed.

The Medak Church is renowned for its large pointed stained glass windows that tell the story of the Bible in a kaleidoscope of colors though visible only in solar light. Made of Italian tiles, the spired bell tower of Medak Church rises to 175 feet high. The length & width of the Cathedral is 200 feet and 100 feet respectively. The roof of the church is sound proof being made by hollow sponge material and has an impressive style of vaulting. A window depicts the birth scene of Jesus, angels, Prophet or Issaiah, Mary and astrologers. The left side of the church bears the painted crucification scene and in the center the ascension of Jesus is painted bright. Each window is made up of several bits of stained glass delicately set into the massive stone windows. The window to the north which offers a canopy to the altar is awesome. The church has enough space to accommodate 5000 people at a time in its huge dimension.

According to popular legend the church was built out of a famine that struck Medak during World War I for 3 years when hundreds of people approached the Reverend C.W.Posnett, an English Missionary, for food and blessings. He provided with the food for the starving and as an act of gratification to God built the Medak Church with the labor and love of the people.

Very naturally, Easter, Christmas and New Year are celebrated with great pomp in Medak Church. Medak is 90 kms from Hyderabad and is well served by road network. Frequent buses and private transport are the options to choose from. Accommodations are easily available in hotels and lodges of Medak.
