Business in Arunachal Pradesh


Arunachal Pradesh has attained statehood on 20th February, 1987. But 20 years has not been enough for the state to leave its mark in the national business scenario. Business in Arunachal Pradesh still now has not been able to put up an encouraging picture. The gross domestic product of Arunachal Pradesh last year was Rs 255637 lakhs and net domestic product was US$552.3 million. The per capita income of Arunachal Pradesh in the year 2004-2005 was US$427.072. The contribution of the Primary Sector to the state product was 29.79%, of the Secondary Sector was 27.72% while 42.49% was the contribution of the tertiary sector.

The advantage of Arunachal Pradesh is that the land is replete with natural resources. 61000 sq km of the state is covered with dense forests of varied types. So handloom and handicrafts products are common here for the easy availability of the raw materials. Tourism forms a major business of Arunachal Pradesh, receiving tourists round the year from every corner of the globe. Business in Arunachal Pradesh also includes the rich mineral contents of the state. Minerals like coal, graphite, lead, zinc, dolomite, marble apart from their own market value, supports fertilizers plants, refractory units, Calcium Carbide manufacturing units and also Gasification and Cooking Plants in Arunachal Pradesh. The installed capacity of Thermal Energy in Arunachal Pradesh is 15.88 MW, Hydro-electric energy is 8.50 MW and other energies are 25.98 MW.

Recently, to increase the business propensities in Arunachal Pradesh, the State Government is encouraging foreign investors, cooperative and private sectors and holding meetings with entrepreneurs. Initially, upliftment of the industries based on local raw materials, on non-timber products, textile and electronics industries are the prior places of concern for the Government.
