Livestock in Arunachal Pradesh

While agriculture is the primary occupation in Arunachal Pradesh, it is followed up and accentuated by the proper maintenance of livestocks. The livestock in Arunachal Pradesh is not only employed solely for agricultural purpose, they also have the efficacy and usage value of their own. They are also the sources of milk, meat, egg, manure and also as a means of transportation is rural areas. So, livestock in Arunachal Pradesh forms a part and parcel of the family as well as the state's economy.

The animals that form the bulk of the livestock at Arunachal Pradesh are cows, goats, pigs, sheep and poultry farms. In Arunachal Pradesh, Yak is an important livestock. This state experiences a negative growth rate of buffalo, but the growth rate of goat is 20.11% and the number of pigs and poultry farms per household in Arunachal Pradesh is maximum among all other North-eastern Indian states. As far as fishery is concerned, pisciculture in Arunachal Pradesh is gathering its momentum with Governmental initiatives and helps.

Arunachal Pradesh faces many constraints in developing its livestocks resources. The surface of the state is basically rocky, hardly with any grasslands. Whatever grazing land is there, they are being fast occupied either for cultivation or industrialization. Secondly, the absence of livestock feed is posing another hurdle and finally the unscientific method of livestocks rearing is making the scenario of Arunachal Pradesh livestocks more bleak. Similarly, rapid growth of weeds and lack of nutrients is restraining the development of pisciculture in Arunachal Pradesh.

To make the scenario of livestock in Arunachal Pradesh positive, artificial insemination should be taken care of, feed mill should be set up, data base of livestock should be maintained and strengthening of veterinary extension services is also a must. Recently, Rural Volunteer center at Daporijo, Upper Subansiri is rearing cattle in scientific methods and also providing vocational courses to the villagers.
