Minerals and Energy in Arunachal Pradesh

Nature has bestowed all her grace on Arunachal Pradesh. Apart from being a land of biodiversity, Arunachal Pradesh also has rich mineral contents. To explore the minerals and energy in Arunachal Pradesh, Mineral Development and Trading Corporation Limited (APMDTCL) was established in 1991.The main objective of this establishment is to search and dig out the mineral substances. In collaboration with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, they arrange to process the alloys and metallic products. APMDTCL also maintain teams of geologists and engineers to provide consultancy services regarding dressing and refining of metals.

In spite of the effective presence of APMDTCL, most of the mineral resources of Arunachal Pradesh remains unexplored till date. According to surveys carried out by CIL, GIS, CMPDIL, OIL, MECL and obviously APMDTCL, there is deposition of:

  • Coal at Bhalukpong
  • Graphite at Tahila, Bopi, Khetabari
  • Limestone at Hunli, Tidding, Menga and Pagin
  • Marble at Hunli, Tezu, Pyuli and Dora
  • Dolomite in Kaspi and Rupa and
  • Lead and Zinc at Shergaon.
These anticipated minerals in Arunachal Pradesh can support Gasification and Cooking Plants, Fertilizers plants and Refractory units and also Calcium Carbide manufacturing units.

At present, Parasuram Cement Ltd, based on Tidding limestone deposits, is the only mineral based industry in Arunachal Pradesh.

As far as usage of energy is concerned in Arunachal Pradesh, The Bureau of Energy Efficiency, a statutory body under Ministry of Power Government of India, arranges campaigns in the villages of Arunachal Pradesh to educate the tribes about the renewable energy resources. More recently, Tata Energy Research Institute has been set up with the same purpose. They tend to manufacture products that tend to promote proper utilization of energy. Some of such products are solar home lighting system, solar lanterns, modern chulhas, etc.
