Arunachal Pradesh orchids are widely popular across the whole globe. This is why, apart from the usual fare of tourist destinations, sightseeing of orchid gardens and forests is also a favorite among tourists in this hilly state. The hilly state is also known as Orchid Paradise because it contains more than half of the total varieties of orchids available in India.
Orchid Research and Development
Some of the species of orchids in Arunachal Pradesh are rare and exclusive. This is why an Orchid Research and Development Station at Tipi and two orchid conservation sanctuaries at Dirang and Sessa in the district of West Kameng has been set up by the Department of Environment and Forest of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh so as to look after the prevention of the beautiful blossoms.

Out of the 600 species of orchids in Arunachal Pradesh, around 150 have commercial importance are exported all across the globe. The state has a very high potential for starting an orchid trade industry, but since many flowers are counted amongst the rarest species of plants, trade of orchids around Arunachal Pradesh has been banned under the Convention of International Trade for Endangered Species (CITES).
The orchids of Arunachal Pradesh are believed to have been worn by some great women in Indian history and mythology including Sita and Draupadi. And the species of flower that were worn by them are known as Sita-pushpa and Draupadi-pushpa. Some of the very important species of Arunachal Pradesh orchids are Dendroblum Aphylla, Phaius flavus, Rhynchostylis retusa, etc.
An Orchid Society of Arunachal Pradesh was formed to spread the message of conservation and development of orchids at Arunachal Pradesh.
