Arunachal Pradesh judiciary operates under the jurisdiction of the Gauhati High Court. The Gauhati High Court has a circuit bench that operates from Itanagar. On July 18, 2000 the then President of India, Sri KR Narayanan introduced a permanent circuit bench of the Gauhati High Court at Itanagar. It thereby became the apex court of the judiciary at Arunachal Pradesh. Local Courts of Arunachal Pradesh Judiciary
The local courts play a very important role in maintaining the judiciary in Arunachal Pradesh. The district courts are the apex courts in the districts. They operate through a number of local judicial bodies. Both criminal cases and civil cases are adjudged by the district courts. While the district magistrate is the highest authority in the case of criminal cases, the sessions judge oversee the civil cases in the districts. They are helped by a number of legal magistrates and munseffs respectively.
