Kurung Kumey


Year 2000 had been a major year for the politics of Arunachal Pradesh. The state saw the birth of a new district, the fifteenth one in the state. Bifurcated from Subansiri district, the new district Kurung Kumey came into existence. The bill was moved by the then Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Mukut Mithi and it was unanimously acknowledged by the House. Finally, the new district Kurung Kumey came into being through the passing of the State Re-organization of districts Amendment bill.

The administrative headquarters of Kurung Kumey is located at Laying-Yangte. There are 11 more administrative centers in Kurung Kumey distributed throughout the district. This step of the Arunachal Pradesh has been a productive one. These administrative centers provide service and facilities to people dwelling in the interior-most parts of the district. Those tribal people were not even in the count of the administration, now get benefits and Government aids.

The tribes of Kurung Kumey district are Tagin, Sulung, Nyishi. The main occupation of these tribes are agriculture and hunting.
