Naharlagun


Located at an altitude of 200 meters above sea level on the foothills of Himalayas, Naharlagun is a small, but important town of Papum Pare district. Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh is only 10 kms away from the state capital, Itanagar. Naharlagun, unlike many other towns of Arunachal Pradesh, is blessed with easy accessibility. The nearest railway station of Naharlagun is Harmuty, 23 kms away. In Assam, Lilabari, the nearest airport is 57 kms from the town. By road, Naharlagun is 381 km from Guwahati, 980 km from Agartala and 481 km from Shillong. The helipad of Naharlagun has recently made communication easy.

Since the town is surrounded by mountains, Naharlagun enjoys suffers annual long monsoon rains. Naharlagun is one of the nine administrative sites of Papum Pare district. The town is resided by local tribes like Nishi and the Mikir. The main occupation of these people is agriculture. Orchids, canes, bamboos and a wide variety of creepers are the vegetation of Naharlagun.

Tourism in Naharlagun supports the economy of the district to a great extent. The tourist spots of Naharlagun are:

  • Polo Park: Placed on a small hillock, it is a popular Botanical garden. This provides an over view of the Naharlagun town. The authority of the park runs a handicraft center which sells ethnic products like carpets, caskets, shawls and shoe pieces made of bamboo and canes. There also a small zoo inside the park.


  • Zoo: Situated 18 kms away, this zoo near Banderdewa police check post houses most rare species of Himalayan birds and animals.


  • Pachin River: This is the favorite picnic spot among the locals. It is a suitable spot for angling.
