Situated at 3048 meters above sea level, Tawang Town was the district headquarters of undivided West Kameng. Now it is the headquarter of Tawang district. The geographical location of Tawang Town is 27.58° N latitude and 91.87° E longitude. About 580 kms from the capital of the state, Itanagar, The nearest airport to Tawang is at Tezpur. Rangapara and Bhalukpong are the nearest railway station and by road, there are bus service available from the major towns of Arunachal Pradesh. To travel to Tawang, Indian tourists must collect Inner Line Permit and for international tourists, a Restricted Area Permit from the Commissioner of Government of Arunachal Pradesh is a must.
- The Tawang Monastery: The Tawang Monastery in Tawang was built way back in 1681 by Mera Lama. It is one of the largest of the type in India. This monastery is also known as Tawang Galden Namgyal Lhatse. This monument was badly affected by the 1962 Chinese invasion.
- Pankang Teng Tso Lake: This is a natural lake only 17 kms away from the Tawang Town. Other lakes of the place are Banggangjang Lake and Sangetser Lake.
