Tezu


Located at 27.92° N latitude and 96.17° E longitude, Tezu is the administrative headquarters of Lohit District. The nearest airport to Tezu is at Dibrugarh and Guwahati. There are plenty of roadways options to reach Tezu. Tourists can take bus from Dhola or Tinsukia and cross some rivers like Digaru or Noa-dehing to reach Tezu. Arunachal Pradesh state transport service also provides buses for Tezu from Tensukia. There are two check posts, each at Dirak(65 kms from Tezu) and Sunpura(30 kms from Tezu).

Tezu is resided by indigenous tribes like Mishmi, Khamti, Digaru and Miju. The fairs and festivals of these locals form an important attraction of Tezu tourism. Festivals like Tamladu and Sangken in Tezu are enjoyed to the lees by the tourists as well. While the former is celebrated mainly by the Mish, on 15th February, the Khamtis celebrate the latter on 14th of April. A handsome fair is held in January every year on the eve of Makar Sankranti when pilgrims from all over the country come to take a dip in Parasuram Kund in Tezu. Few of other attractions of Tezu are:

  • Buddha-Vihar: Locally known as Chong, one of the biggest of the type is situated on the Wakro – Tezu road.
  • Dong: This small hamlet 200 kms from Tezu proudly experienced the 'first sunrise of the millennium in India'.
  • Glow Lake: Covering an area of 8 sq km, this lake is a rich seat of Himalayan Flora and fauna.
  • District Museum/Craft Centers: Centrally situated at Tezu, this museum houses many ethnic handloom and artifacts of the local tribes.
Tezu is also visited by tourists for trekking, river rafting and hiking. Some of the accommodations of Tezu are Circuit House, Tourist Lodge, Inspection Bungalow, etc. The best time to visit Tezu is from November to February.
