Situated approximately at 28 degrees 06 minutes North latitude and 97 degrees East longitude,
Walong is the administrative town of Anjaw District. This town is on the western bank of Lohit river. Walong is 200 kms from Tezu and it is about 1094 meters above sea level. The Indo-Chinese border is just 20 kms from
Walong.
Walong of Arunachal Pradesh has great historical significance. It was here that the Indian Army 11th Infantry Brigade stood against the Chinese invading forces in the autumn of 1962. Reminiscing the valiant efforts of those soldiers, a large memorial has been built on the road to Kibithu in 2002.
Just as the climate of
Walong is cool and pleasant, the place is also adorned by some beautiful sight scenes. Significant
tourist spots of Walong are:
Glow Lake: At a height of 5000 meters above sea level, this lake covers 8 sq km. Glow lake is surrounded by varieties of trees, with the background of snow clad mountain tops. It is a favorite destination for trekkers starting from Chongkham-Wakro road.
Hot Spring: Along with one in Kibithoo circle, there is also a hot spring 5 kms from Walong. Because of its easy accessibility, this one is preferred by the tourists over the Kibithoo hot spring.
Hawa Camp: Located towards Hayuliang, this camp provides excellent over view of the entire Lohit Vallley. The sun rise and sunset views of this place is a must for tourists to experience.
Dong: Surrounded by pine forests, this village of Meyor Communities has the honor of experiencing the 'first sunrise of the millennium in India'.
