Dress and Culture of the Apatanis

The dressing style of the Apatanis tribes in Arunachal Pradesh are different from the other tribes. The old men of the Apatani tribe still continue with the traditional custom of making tattoos on their faces. They also keep long hair and tie them in a top knot. Previously, it was a common feature on the part of the womenfolk to draw tattoos and wear nose rings. But since the beginning of 1970s the popularity of these customs have been on the down slide. Now the Apatanis are more free to follow their wishes as far as styles and dressings are concerned.

The Apatanis are one of the most advanced weavers of this state. The coats and shawls made by the Apatanis are wonderful and are of very high quality. Besides cotton or wool they use fibers extracted from trees, as well as human and goat hairs for weaving. Even the shirts, handbags, carpets and lungis made by them are of excellent artistic feature. Many embroidered cloths are also produced by them.

In contrast with the other tribes of Arunachal Pradesh, the Apatanis are much more socially advanced and financially stable.
