Donyi Poloism

Donyi Poloism is one of the major religions that is practiced in the north-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh in India. Very few primitive religions are still practiced in Arunachal Pradesh and Donyi Poloism is one of them. The philosophy that the followers of Donyi Poloism at Arunachal Pradesh believe in, is animistic in nature. The literal meaning of the local coinage 'Donyi Poloism' is 'sun and moon'.

The population of the state of Arunachal Pradesh still have faith in such a primitive form of animistic religion as Donyi Poloism of Arunachal Pradesh, whereas the people of the other states of the north-eastern part of India have been largely Christianized.

However, Arunachal Pradesh is also gradually coming under the influence of Christianity and religions like Donyi Poloism might take a back seat in future. At present, Donyi Poloism in Arunachal Pradesh is a religion that still reminds us of its age-old history.

The religion is devoid of any significant written documents. It has been passed down generation after generation orally. According to the followers of the religion of Donyi Poloism in Arunachal Pradesh, the sun as well as the moon signify the eyes of God himself. Since the sun and the moon are visible in the day sky and night sky respectively every day, God can see all that happens on Earth.

Such an analogy between the sun and the moon and the God's eyes is drawn to put emphasis on the basic animistic philosophy. According to this philosophy, nothing can be hidden from the God. He is an all-knowing entity.
