Hrusso or Akas

The Hrusso or Akas constitute one of the main ethnic groups that reside in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in India. The Hrusso or Akas of Arunachal Pradesh mainly dwell in the south-eastern region of the district of Kameng. However, the dense population of the Arunachal Pradesh Hrusso or Akas are found in the region called Thrizine.

The Hrusso or Akas in Arunachal Pradesh speak in their own language, which is quite different from the languages of other tribes of the region. The Hrusso or Aka language is a part of the Tibeto-Burman language family. One of the main occupations of the Hrusso or Akas of Arunachal Pradesh is the cultivation of jhum. They also engage themselves in hunting.

The Hrusso women use a variety of silver accessories and beaded necklaces. The ornaments worn in general are are rombin, melu, gejjul and gichlu.

The people of the plains refer to this tribal group of Arunachal Pradesh as the Akas, while they call themselves the Hrussos. The word 'aka' means 'painted'. The name Aka is given to them because of the common tradition of the tribe of painting their own faces.

The Akas are not rebellious in nature and generally use weapons for their own protection. Since they live in the close vicinity of nature, they need to protect themselves from many kinds of wild animals. The weapon that they use most frequently is the bow and arrow. They refer to them as the Tkeri and the Moo respectively.
