Monpa Festival


Monpa festival is mainly celebrated by the Monpa tribe in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The Monpas are believed to have a strong festive culture. They celebrate lots of festivals throughout the year.

Most of the Monpa festival in Arunachal Pradesh are celebrated for agricultural purpose while the others bear religious significance. The festivals offer an insight into the culture and tradition of the Monpa tribe. From the tourism point of view, the Monpa festival of Arunachal Pradesh is also significant for it shows the actual beauty through the culture of the state.

The Monpa festival at Arunachal Pradesh is not a single festival but it comprises of various festivals such as Losar, Dukpa Tse-Shi, Ganden Ngamchoe, Saga Dawa, Torgya, Lhabab Duechen and Choekhor. Losar is one of the most important Monpa festival because it marks the beginning of the new year. The other significant festival of Monpas is the Choekhor festival which is celebrated to prevent the newly sown crops before harvest.

Arunachal Pradesh Monpa festival celebrates everything from religious events to supernatural beliefs. Some festivals like Torgya and Choekhor displays the supernatural beliefs of the Monpas as they pray to prevent themselves and the whole village from any evil spirit or any kind of supernatural attack.

The main attraction of the Monpa festival, Arunachal Pradesh is the spirit and enthusiasm with which the Monpas celebrate. The festival showcases the unity, strength, culture, traditions and living style of the Monpas through their costumes, dance, music, food, etc.
