Monpas


Arunachal Pradesh has historically been a popular tribal-tourism destination and is gaining reputation as a fast growing tourist destination for adventure and nature lovers as well. Among the tribes of Arunachal Pradesh the Monpas are of a very simple and generous nature.

Monpas Location and Physique



If it is to describe Arunachal Pradesh in a simple phrase, which will provide the whole essence of the state, then it would be – a tribal heritage. Along with its lofty hills, majestic green valleys, roaring rivers and unending collection of flora and fauna, the numerous tribal communities have given a separate identity to this land. Among them, the Monpas have bright completion and strong physique. The Monpa tribe inhabit the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The traditional Monpa houses are made of stones and timbers. Every house is accompanied by a chapel.

Monpas Craftsmanship and Occupation



The Monpas of Arunachal Pradesh have achieved excellence in cane and bamboo crafting. The products made of canes and bamboos are mainly baskets, mats, combs and other decorative ornaments. The craftspersons of the Monpa group make many exclusive fashionable items for home decoration, which are very popular in the state as well as outside.

Weaving is a common feature among the tribal women of Arunachal Pradesh. The Monpa looms are the perfect examples of Tibetan and Bhutanese influence. The Monpa women weave cloths with wool, fiber and cotton. Besides this, agriculture and animal farming are the other two means of earning for this community. Monpas in Arunachal Pradesh largely practice Buddhism. A communal harmony and cultural richness could be seen in the Monpas tribal community.
