Nyokum


The state of Arunachal Pradesh, regarded as the 'land of the dawn lit mountains' is bestowed with an entire caboodle of festivities and events which are absolutely spectacular. Amongst them, Nyokum is one of the most coveted festivals that is feted by the individuals belonging to the Nishi tribe. Nyokum is primarily celebrated during the latter half of each year in the month of August.

Like most of the festivities that epitomizes the state of Arunachal Pradesh, Nyokum is also celebrated to offer sincere reverence to the deity of crops and prosperity, 'Goddess Lakshmi'. As a matter of fact, the sole objective behind feting Nyokum in Arunachal Pradesh is to obtain a good yield with regards to crops and to be blessed with the gift of wealth and prosperity.

The maidens clad themselves in multi colored attires and present a well-choreographed dance simply to assuage the Goddess Lakshmi. In actual practice, the varied images along with symbols of Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped with a lot of consecration and pomp.

The girls also emit melodious tunes to add that special touch to this festival of Nyokum at Arunachal Pradesh. Their songs comprises of lyrics that prays for the prosperity and well being. This sums up the proceedings of the first day of Nyokum of Arunachal Pradesh.

The second day of this festival is marked by the cruel sacrifice of a number of animals that constitutes an indispensable portion of the rituals that are performed during this festival. All in all it is a spectacular festival.
