The art of paper makings at Arunachal Pradesh is not widely practiced. Only the members of the Monpa tribe involve themselves in paper makings in Arunachal Pradesh. The paper is usually made out of the Sukso tree, a plant that is unique to the forests of the region and preserved by the members of the tribe. However, sometime other trees are also used in creating paper.
The Arunachal Pradesh paper makings have sacred connotations. It is integrally connected with the ritualistic and the religious practices of the Monpas. These papers are made following strict rules that have come down through the ages. The quality of this largely manually extracted paper is excellent. They are used for writing sacred words and hymns of Buddhist religion. The script used is ancient and the representations are aesthetically valuable. These papers with religious writings are preserved with great reverence not only by the members of the tribe, to whom they are extremely sacred, but also by the connoisseurs who take an interest in collecting these objects. All in all, Arunachal paper makings may not be a thriving art in a true sense, but is nevertheless one of the most sought after art objects to come out of the state.
