Wanchos


The Wanchos are one of the main ethnic groups found in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. The Wanchos in Arunachal Pradesh mainly occupy the western region of the district called Tirap. This district is located at the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

The Wanchos at Arunachal Pradesh have a well organized society. They are broadly classified into four different classes. These are namely the Wangpana, the Wanghams, the Wangaas and the Wangaue. Of these four classes, the Wangham class constitute the chiefs of their society. The Wanchos of Arunachal Pradesh are still referred to as the tribe of the head hunters, as it used to be an integral part of their socio-cultural life in the past.

The Wanchos in Arunachal Pradesh are not at all rebellious in nature. They are a happy tribe, who are known in the region for their ability to work hard and live life to the fullest. The Wanchos in Arunachal Pradesh have gained popularity in the region for their sense of discipline.

The Wancho women are skilled in weaving. However, only the women belonging to the chief's family gets the honor of carrying on the lineage of weaving. These women are also efficient in wood carving.

The society is well administered with the help of the village council. The village council looks after the law and order department. For the convenience of administration, the Wanchos in Arunachal Pradesh are divided into as many as forty villages. They have strong faith in two gods called Rang and Baurang.
