Nunneries of Tawang


Tawang is famous for its school of nunneries and holds an age old heritage. The Tawang nunneries are basically the convents of Buddhists nuns who stay in those houses to practice their religion. The nuns of the nunneries of Tawang undergo their religious study and ritual practice there.

Numerous nunneries have been identified in Tawang district among them the oldest one which is situated 12 km far from Tawang is the Brama Dung Chung Ani Gompa. The most amazing thing about this nunnery is its natural beauty. This offers a picturesque natural view of the mountains and the valleys. Situated on the lap of nature, this nunnery provides a spectacular view of the lush green valleys and sky touching hills. The nunnery was constructed by Karchen Yeshi Gelek, a Buddhist monk in the year 1959. Presently there are 45 nuns residing in this house who mainly earn their living by door to door begging.

Gyangong Ani Gompa, another nunnery at Tawang was established by Mera Lam Lodre Gyamtso which was later on given to his sister by him. This nunnery is located at a distance of only 5 km in the north of Tawang.

The Singsur Ani Gompa is another attractive nunnery in Tawang which is located 28 km west from Tawang district. This beautiful nunnery is the home for 30 nuns who are popularly known as Ani. This nunnery has two branches- the New Singsur Ani Gompa and the Old Singsur Ani Gompa whereas, the later one is situated in the middle of the huts of the nuns there. The New Singsur Ani Gompa was established in 1960 by Rev. Gonpatse Rimpoche.

The nuns of the nunneries of Tawang enjoy their self devoted lives.
