Tawang Monastery


The monasteries of Arunachal Pradesh sings the glory of Buddhism in north eastern region. The Tawang Monastery of Arunachal Pradesh is one of the frequently visited monasteries of India. This monastery witnesses maximum crowd in the months of October to April.

The Tawang Monastery which is popularly known as Galden Namgyal Lhatse was constructed by Merak Lama Lodre Gyamtso. The profile of the Tawang Monastery says that it is the 2nd largest monastery in Asia and shows its birth during 1960-61 AD.

Being the largest monastery of Arunachal Pradesh, it has a large quarter which provides enough accommodation for 700 monks. The assembly hall of the Tawang Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh is known as Dukhang. The inside decoration of this hall is done with colorful splashes of colors and murals of divine Buddhist monks.

A gigantic statue of Buddha is standing in the middle north side of the courtyard which is about 26 ft high. A three storied building occupies the western side of the monastery court which is the library of the monks. The sacred scriptures are located on the southern part whereas a part of the two storied building situated on the same side is used as a store house by the monks.

Besides this, the Tawang Monastery at Arunachal Pradesh also has a faculty for Buddhist Cultural Studies to teach English, Hindi, Arithmetic in an innovative way to the young monks.

To reach the Tawang Monastery is a tough job. There is no railway station or airport located in Tawang. The only way is to avail a bus or other vehicle from Tezpur. Some lodges and guests houses are there for providing accommodation to the tourists.
