Tawang


Tawang is one of the most important destinations in Arunachal Pradesh. The district is situated at the western edge of Arunachal Pradesh at a height of 12000 feet above sea level. The place is inhabited by the tribe called Monpa. The headquarters of the district of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh is Tawang. The most popular religion in the region is Mahayana Buddhism. The second highest pass in the world is located near Tawang at a height of 14000 feet.

Tawang of Arunachal Pradesh is well known for its Buddhist monastery, which is as old as 400 years. It was established by Mera Lama, who was a monk of the time of the fifth Dalai Lama. It is located at the border between India and Bhutan at an altitude of 3500 meters. The monastery contains many age-old scriptures, images, Buddhist scriptures with gold letters, tapestries and books. This monastery is also called Gompa or Galden Namgyal Lhatse.

Tourists often travel to Tawang at Arunachal Pradesh to hike and trek. The months of October and May are most suitable for trekking in this region. Particularly, the region surrounding the Tawang Chu is very popular among the trekkers. The most common trekking journey starts from Jong, which is located in between the places of Tawang and Se- la and proceeds to the place called Mago. This trekking route through the forests offers fascinating view of waterfalls.

The airport closest to this place is located at Guwahati. The railhead closest to the place is located at Bhalukpong. This place is situated in the district of West Kameng. It is at a distance of 280 kms from Tawang. The ideal time for visiting this place is between April and October.
