Fisheries in Assam


The state's department of fisheries in Assam aims to promote and develop economic farming of fish in the state. This wing of the state government wants to promote the idea of commercially producing fish in almost all the water bodies in the state.

The mission of the fisheries department in Assam is to ensure a stable income from the fish market. They also want to restore indigenous species of fish in the state. They are planning to produce fish of such quality so that the state production can compete with the imported ones. In such cases they will have to consider the cost of production as well.

The objectives of the fishery department also include helping the fish farmers and sellers. They also conduct and promote research and development programs on issues related to fish farming in the state. They provide technical guidance to the fish farmers of Assam. Guidelines on fishery management, advice related to analysis and treatment of water and tips on disease control are also provided by this department.

Growth rate of profit in this sector is quite highly noteworthy. Though it is expected that a proper marketing and development of the infrastructure will prove to be more profitable. Fisheries in Assam, as a profitable commercial activity is gradually gaining popularity. Farmers in the districts of Barpeta, Nagaon, Karimganj,Kamrup, Darrang,Cachar and Morigaon are gradually taking up fish farming commercially. Presently the state of Assam is producing 1.81 lakh MT of fish regularly.

Fish farming in the state of Assam is expected to become one of the most profitable economic activities in the years to come.
