Industry in Assam


The tea Industry in Assam is one of the internationally renowned sectors. However, apart from this there are many different industrial activities too going on in the state. The state government is looking forward to more development in this sector as a result of the implementation of certain schemes that were recently designed. Since the state is blessed with natural resources so their proper exploitation is now the main aim of the state government.

The Industries and Commerce Department of the state is trying to overcome all the hurdles and promote a right industrial climate in the state. There are about 12 industrial estates under this department in Assam.

The small-scale industries of Assam also have a very important role to play in order to ensure proper industrialization in the state. The tenth five-year plan has been proposed for this purpose. Development of infrastructure and facilities for setting up different industrial units properly is the main aim. The outlay agreed for establishment of the small scale and handicrafts industry in the state was Rs. 5450.00 during the tenth five-year plan.

Sericulture is a very important rural industry in Assam. This is a traditional industry. This involves the culture of a large variety of silkworms in the state. Activities that are related to the culture of Muga, Eri and Mulberry silkworms are expected to play a very significant role in the economic development of the state.

The handloom industry in this state of Assam also has a remarkably long tradition. It involves a large section of rural population of the state.
