Livestock Assam


The population of livestock Assam is not as high as most of the other states of India. The livestock of Assam mainly belong to the indigenous kind. According to the livestock census the population of livestock in Assam increased to 134.67 lakh in the year 1997 from 129.23 in 1994. The livestock survey reflected a remarkable rise of 29.03% in the poultry population in the year 1997.Amongst the livestock population of the state of Assam, cattle are the largest in number. There were 80.30 lakh cattle in the 1997. Next in the list are the Goats in Assam with a population of 26.77 lakh. During the same year there were 10.82 lakh pigs and 7.28 lakh buffaloes in the state.

A development scheme for the Livestock Assam has been planned. The main aim behind this scheme is the socio- economic development of the state. Such programs are expected to create better scope for employment in the state. Some of such schemes are listed below:

(i) Intensive Cattle Development Project (ICDP)
(ii) Co-ordinated Cattle Breeding Project
(iii) Bovine Contagious Pneumonia Scheme (BCPP)
(iv) National Project on Rinderpest Eradication (NPRE)
(v) Piggery Development
(vi) Poultry Development


There are many other schemes planned by the government of Assam. They are related to the increase in livestock products in the state. According to the data made available by the State Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary the production of milk in Assam in 2002-2003 was estimated at 773 million liters. Indicating an increase of 3.06 per cent over the production of the previous year. The production of egg during the year 2002-2003 has been estimated at 509 million. The production of meat during this year was estimated at 20.94 thousand tonnes, against the 19.48 thousand tonnes of the previous year.

Thus a rise in the products of Livestock Assam is one of the major aims of the state.
