Gauhati University


Established in the year 1948, the Gauhati University is one of the oldest universities of the northeastern states of India situated in the state of Assam. The university was set up under the Guahati University Act of 1947.

The foundation day of the university is celebrated on the 26th of January as the first court meeting of the Guahati University was held at the Sudmerson Hall of Cotton College on this day in the year 1948. The university is spread over sprawling areas of land at Jalukbari in the city of Guwahati. The university has residential houses for the students and the faculty situated within the campus. The huge campus includes parks, canteens, guesthouses, clubs, markets, playgrounds and auditoriums. The university campus is flourished with several other amenities like the telegraph and postal service, proper water supply and a branch of the State Bank of India. The university has 20 halls of residence in the campus for the students with as many as 1500 students residing in the hostels. The campus of the university was shifted from its earlier location to the present in the year 1955-56.

The university offers several graduate and postgraduate courses in various disciplines under the following faculties:

The university offers financial assistance from the Poor Students Aid Fund to those meritorious students who are unable to pay for their education. The state and central government has also granted several scholarships for the students of the university.

The Guahati University of Assam is the first premier university set up in the northeastern region of India. The university has earned its repute as an accomplished seat of learning and promoted education and academics in the region.
