Assam Chief Justice



The honorable Assam Chief Justice is an important component of the judicial system of the state of Assam. The honorable Chief Justice of Assam holds office and court in the Guwahati High Court situated in the city of Guwahati.

The high court in Guawahati has the principal seat of the state of Assam but also has benches for Shillong, Aizwal, Kohima, Agartala, Imphal and Itanagar for the different states. The Chief Justice presides over the full, single and division benches of the high court in Guwahati. The first Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court was Sir R.F Lodge who was appointed to the post on 5th of April in the year 1948 by the then Governor of the state of Assam, His Excellency Sir Akbar Hydari. The present Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court is Honorable Justice Jasti Chelameswar. He was born to late Jasti Lakshminarayana in the Krishna district of the state of Andhra Pradesh. After his graduation in law from the Andhra University in Visakhapatnam, he performed as an advocate in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh. He also worked as a pleader for the government in home affairs. His Excellency was also the standing counsel of the Andhra Pradesh Lokayukta between 1985 and 1986. Before assuming the role of the Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court, he was the additional judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He was sworn as the Chief Justice on the 3rd of May in the year 2007.

The Assam Chief Justice works with twenty-two other judges in the High Court in Guwahati presiding over the judiciary of the state of Assam.
