The present Assam Council of Ministers was given their portfolios on the 21st of May in the year 2006 after the present government of the state of Assam was elected. The elected members were sworn into their office and they performed their duties in the various departments assigned to them.

The council of ministers of Assam is headed by the chief minister of the state of Assam and aids the head of the state in governance. The ministers are assigned various departments. The chief minister himself looks after the Home ministry and other departments like political, finance, public works and departments not specified or allotted to ministers. The state also has Mr. Rihon Doimari working with independent charge as the minister of state for public health engineering. The chief minister works with the help of the Assam council of Ministers for the welfare of the state of Assam.
