The reigns of the administration of the Assam Government has remained in the hands of the Congress save a brief spell when the BJP took over for a span of two years. At present, however the current government of Assam lies under the jurisdiction of the Indian National Congress. The Congress finally came to power after nearly two decades of juggling the seats with the Assam Gono Parishad (AGP).
A council of ministers assists the governor. The ministry is led by Shri. Tarun Gogoi who was born in Jorhat District's Rangajan Tea Estate on 1st April 1936. A proficient lawyer by profession, Shri. Gogoi's leadership skills and convincing abilities came into the limelight pretty early in his career. An eminent member of the Students' Union and the Commandership of Students' Volunteer Corps during his college days, the Hon'ble Chief Minister made his mark in the field of politics when he was elected as a member of the Jorhat Municipal Board. This was followed by stints of time when he served as the General Secretary of All India congress Committee and the President of Assam Pradesh Congress (I) Committee before his present designation as the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Assam.
