Assam High Court
The Assam High Court was established after the legislative assembly of the state of Assam adopted the resolution of creating a high court for the state on 9th of September in the year 1948. The High Court of Assam stands in the city of Guwahati and is also known as the Guwahati High Court.

The Constitution of India propounded the necessity of the High Court in every state in Article 214. With the acceptance of the proposal of the legislative assembly of the state by the Governor General of India, the High court of Assam was effective from the 5th of April 1948. The high court was inaugurated by Sir Harilal Kania who was the then Chief Justice of India and was also visited by the Governor of Assam, Sir Akbar Hydari. The Guwahati High Court was put in charge of the territory of Assam and six other north eastern states of Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh. The high court in Guwahati has the principal seat of Guwahati and six benches presently for the other states. The High Court in Assam has the strength of 22 judges and six additional judges. The honorable Chief Justice of the High Court is the presiding judge of the court.
The court has the jurisdiction over the subsidiary courts and the tribunals of the states. The Assam High Court has the unique characteristic of being the court with powers over seven states of India.
