The
Assam judiciary is divided into the
Assam High Court that is situated in the city of Guwahati and the district courts of the state. The
judiciary in Assam works effectively meeting out laws and maintaining order in the state.
The
Guwahati High Court was set up after the Assam Legislative Assembly initiated a law stating the necessity to set up a high court in the state of
Assam under Article 214 of the Constitution which read that each state will have a high court. The Assam High Court was established from 5th of April in the year 1948. The High Court has the strength of 23 judges and additional judges and is presided over by the honorable
Chief Justice of Assam. The high court has the powers of legislation over the other subsidiary courts and tribunals. It can issue territorial laws and orders over the encompassing area of its control. The high court holds session in two parts. In the morning, it holds court from 10.30 A.M to 1.15 PM after which the court is adjourned till the beginning of the second session which continues from 2.00 P.M to 4.15 P.M in the evening.
The Chief Justice of the Assam High Court is an important component of the
judiciary system in Assam. The first Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court was Sir R.F Lodge. The position is sacred to the judicial system and is highly respected in Assam.
The Assam judiciary works effectively issuing decree to maintain law and order in the state of Assam.
