In the year 1937, the Legislative Assembly of Assam was formed. The Assam Legislative Assembly came into existence by the Government Act of 1935. Assam Legislative Assembly became a bicameral government. There was 108 members adorning the assembly. It became only 71 after the Partition of India. The tenure of the assembly is generally 5 years.
The Speaker of Assam belongs to the 72 Barchalla constituency. Mr. Tanka Bahadur Rai has occupied some of the prestigious social positions like General Secretary, President, a member of the Executive Committee of different organizations. He has been elected MLA for twice. He has been also elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Assam. He is affiliated to the Indian National Congress(I). He has been elected as the Assam Speaker in 2001 and 2006 .
The Deputy Speaker of Assam is Ms. Pranati Phukan. She contests from the constituency of 120 Naharkatia. She was elected in 1996 and 2001 from the same Assembly. On 11th May of 2006, from the twelfth Assembly.
Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha form parts of the Assam Legislature. There are fourteen constituencies in the Assam Lok Sabha. The members representing Assam are affiliated to different political parties in Assam like INC, BJP, IND and AGP. From Assam, seven members represent the state in the Parliament. Depending on the relative population of the territories and states, the number of seats to be allocated are determined.
