Assam Politics

The politically active state of Assam has made its mark as a forerunner of Indian politics. Located next to the state of West Bengal, a political den that played a monumental role in India's tumultuous struggle for freedom, Assam politics could not lag far behind.

Of late, Assam politics has attracted a lot of attention owing to the insurgence of the ULFA and other armed groups. To facilitate administration, the state is divided into 13 parliamentary constituencies and 126 assembly constituencies. Several parties falling under the national and regional spotlight contest the elections with the sole objective of forming the state government. On the national front, the dominant parties include:

  • Indian National Congress
  • Nationalist Congress Party
  • Bharatiya Janata Party
  • Communist Party of India
  • Communist Party of India (Marxist)

  • The state parties of Assam are equally dynamic and include the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Asom Gana Parishad (Progressive) (AGPP) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Lenninist) (Liberation).

The highest executive power in Assam is the rank of the Governor. The present Governor Lieutenant General Ajai Singh spearheads the Assam politics and administration. He is assisted by a council of ministers that is headed by Chief Minister, Shri Tarun Gogoi.

The High Court is the highest seat of judiciary in Assam and Hon'ble Chief Justice Jasti Chelameswa is the respected Chief Justice holding court in the Guwahati High Court. The Chief Justice of Assam works with the support and aid of 22 judges, whose offices are sited in the Guwahati High Court and supervise the workings of the state's judiciary.
