Assam Rajya Sabha


Assam Rajya Sabha has a significant role to play as a legislative body. Rajya Sabha is one of the two houses of Parliament of India. It is also known as the Upper House of Parliament. This house of the Parliament has 250 members and it is the maximum strength of member this house can have. The age of the members of this house should be not below the age of thirty. The Rajya Sabha members are elected for a term of six years. The Parliamentary elections are so organized that every two years, one third of the members could be elected.

Only twelve of the members of Rajya Sabha are elected from the legislatures of the states and territories of India. But according to the constitutional laws, Rajya Sabha exercises less power in legislative processes in comparison to the Lower House of Parliament. During the election of the members of Rajya Sabha, the President of India can nominate members, the maximum number being twelve from different fields of work other than politics. These twelve members are nominated on the basis of their experience in their relative field of work or if they have special knowledge in any subject. He can nominate persons with background of art, literature, social service, science etc. Regarding the nomination of these candidates, approval of the Parliament is not required.

From Assam Rajya Sabha, seven members represent the state in the Parliament. Depending on the relative population of the territories and states, the number of seats to be allocated are determined. The following are the name of the members of Rajya Sabha from Assam.
