Medieval Assam
The ruling dynamics of Medieval Assam includes a number of Dynasties that prevailed in the place at that time. The Khen Empire was the first one which started ruling Assam in the medieval times. Koch, Kachari, Chutia and Ahom were the other prominent Dynasties that marked the ruling periods of medieval Assam.
The historical record of medieval Assam points out that Prithu was the first heroic leader who founded the Empire of Kamata. Dominating the land of Kamrupa or ancient Assam till the year 1498, the Khen Kingdom ultimately surrendered itself to Alauddin Hussein Shah of Bengal. Thus began the rule of Turks in the Kingdom of Kamarupa.
After a certain period of time, Turk rulers found it extremely difficult to dominate over the Kamrupa region as there were signs of frequent emergence of several tribal Dynasties. It was in the periods of 16th century that medieval Assam came under the domination of the Koch Kingdom.
While the west of Kamrupa went in the hands of Koch tribes, the east corner of medieval Assam became a ruling ground of Bhuyan, Kachari and Chutia Kingdoms, all of which were representation of some or other tribal communities.
During the ruling era of various tribes, another major Kingdom emerged in the scenario of medieval Assam. Known by the name of Ahoms, the rulers of this Dynasty consistently dominated Kamrupa till the early periods of 19th century.
The Dynasty of Ahom went through many internal disturbances and external invasions too. For one, the Ahom rulers had to involve in wars against the mighty Mughals from time to time. Then again, the Empire of Ahom faced a severe attack from the Burmese rulers in the early parts of 19th century. Although, Ahom Dynasty kept its powers intact till the 19th century, but subsequently the land of Kamrupa came under the rule of British Empire.
Medieval Assam saw its end in the early hours of 19th century.
