Prehistory


Prehistory of Assam states the presence of neolithic, megalithic, paleolithic and metal age cultures. Also, the geographical locations, ruling periods and cultural specialties of some of the earliest rulers of the state had been found in the prehistoric periods of the state of Assam.

The names of Danava Dynasty, Ahom rulers, Barobhuyans, Kachari, Chutia and Koch kingdoms find significant place in the historical archives of Assam.

The archeological expeditions carried in various corners of Assam have ratified the evidences of many ancient tribal communities. Among others, the existential proofs of Australoids and Mongoloids have been found in and around the plains and hilly terrains of Assam.

As per some of the historical records, Assam was present in the contours of the world even in 100 BC. However, enough evidences are yet to be found to support this very fact. The trade history of Assam takes it to the ruling periods of ancient China. According to the archives of China, geographical tracks of Assam were once used to export Chinese silk.

It is believed that the land of Assam in prehistoric periods first came under the rule of Pushya Varman during 350 AD to 380 AD. The then capital of Assam, referred as Kamarupa, was the prime dwelling place of the existing rulers of Assam. The Dyansty of Salasthamba followed the Varman Kingdom and dominated Assam from 725 AD to 990 AD.

Jayapala of the famous Pala Empire was known to take the ruling charges of Assam after the Salasthamba Dynasty. The domination of this Kingdom lasts till 1138 AD after which Assam witnessed many geographical intrusions by Mughal and Mohammedan rulers.

The saga of Assam in the context of its prehistory is indeed a subject of special interest not only for the scholars of history but also for the tourists of different parts of the world.
