The modern city of Tinsukia was previously called by the name of Bangmara. Bangmara was the brain child of the ruler of the region King Sabananda Singha. According to the wishes of the ruler, his minister had built a pond in the shape of a triangle in Bangamara, which came to be known as the Tinikunia Pukhuri and the railway station besides the pond came to be called Tinsukia. The historical city of Tinsukia still bears relics of the rich architectural past of the ancient times.
