Dhemaji is geographically located between 94º 12' 18'' East and 95º 41' 32'' East longitudes and 27º 05' 27'' North and 27º 57' 16'' North latitudes. The district is bounded on the north and the east by the hilly ranges of Arunachal Pradesh, on the south by the river Brahmaputra and on the west by the Lakhimpur. The Dhemaji district was formed on 14th August / 1st October 1989. Dhemaji District is spread over an area of 3237 Sq. Km and lies at an altitude of 104 m above the Mean Sea Level. Accoprding to 2001 Census the total population of the district is 571944 out of which 294643 is the male population and 277301 is the female population.
The economy of Dhemaji is mainly based on agriculture. People are engaged in other activities like fishing, Sericulture, and driftwood business.
Above 85% of the total population of Dhemaji district is depended on agriculture. Rice, pulses, mustard are the major crops grown in the region. The chief areas that grow mustard are Talahi, Gohaingaon, and Narayanpur mouzas of Dhakuakhana. The district is industrially backward with no important small-scale industries. There is not even a single big industry in the whole district of Dhemaji. Weaving or cane and bamboo industries are some of the small-scale industries, which are unable to sustain due to tough competition from machine goods.
