According to 2001 Census the total population of Sivasagar district is recorded as 1051736 comprising of 545476 male and 506260 female. Sivasagar is the district headquarters of Sivasagar district with the sub-divisions of Charaideo, Sivasagar, and six revenue circles namely Mahmora, Sivasagar, Nazira, Demow, Amguri, and Sonari. The district was formerly known as 'Rangpur' and was the capital city of the Ahoms, who dominated Assam for over six hundred years before the rule of Britishers.
The Sivasagar tank located in Sivasagar district is 200 years old. Queen Madambika, wife of Siva Singha, built three temples - the Shivadol, the Vishnudol and the Devidol on the banks of the tank in 1734. Most of the people in the district speak Assamese. Hindi, English and Bengali are the other languages spoken by the people; tribes have their own dialects or languages. Festivals like Holi, Lakhipuja, Kalipuja, Durga Puja, Dewali etc. are celebrated by the people. The Vaishanavas performs Nama Kirtana as they do not believe in idol worship.
