Keeping in sync with the picturesque landscapes and colorful customs, the Assam
People are a perfect example of unity in diversity. Consisting mostly of numerous tribes, the
people of Assam practice different religions and customs. There are people from all parts of the country residing in the state with a prominence of Bengali speaking community and the Nepalis. The major tribes of the state of Assam are:-
- Bodo
- Santhal
- Phake
- Rabha
- Singpho
- Dimasa people
- Karbi
- Khamti
- Khamyang
- Mishing
- Nishi
The
Bodos are the most prominent mongoloid tribe of the state. Some sections of the Bodos have also demanded a separate state for themselves – the Bodoland, which has resulted in insurgency in the state. The
Santhals are one of the oldest tribes of east India. They are good soldiers and proud of their race. The Phake or the Phakial tribes are said to be having their origins in Thailand. They live mostly in the Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts of the state. Another colorful tribe of the state is the Rabhas. The Singphos of Tinsukia District are also found in Arunachal Pradesh. They are divided into several clans. Seen mostly in the North Cachar area of the state, the Dimasa people built their homes in the hill slopes. Inhabiting the Karbi Anglong region, the Karbis are also found in other northeastern states. A small number of Khamti people, who have their origin in Myanmar also live in Assam. The Khamyang, Mishing and Nishi are also other
