Gaurisagar Tank and Temples

Another great tourism destination in and around the Sibsagar Town in Assam is the Gaurisagar Tank and Temples. Rani Phuleswari Devi built the Gaurisagar Tank and Temples almost three hundred years ago. She ruled during 1722 to 1791. The lovely temples built around the grand tank are mainly dedicated to Devi Durga. Phuleswari Devi was the Queen of Sivasimha and she was an avid believer of the Sakta cult. Gauri is the other name of Devi Durga, thus the name Gaurisagar was given.

The Gaurisagar Tank covers a vast stretch of one hundred and fifty acres. The tank is surrounded by three temples i.e. Devidol, Vishnudol and Sivadol. Apart from Goddess Durga, Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are also worshiped in these temples. The Gaurisagar Town is in close proximity to Sibsagar Town with a distance of only twelve Kilometers. A large number of devotees crowd in the adjoining temples every day to offer their prayers. The Gaurisagar Tank is also a favorite hangout for revelers and picnickers. Not only the local people but tourists from all over the state and outsides have found the place worth a visit. If you get the opportunity to visit the Gaurisagar Tank and Temples, you will understand the reasons behind its popularity.
