Jaysagar Tank and Temples


Among other places of interest in Sibsagar, the Jaysagar Tank and Temples has emerged as a hot favorite with the tourists and devotees. The Jaysagar Tank and Temples of Assam was built by King Rudra Singha. He built the Jaysagar Tank in memory of Joymati, his mother. Joymati was an eminent patriot and died fighting for her country.

The Jaysagar Tank covers a total area of three hundred acres. King Rudra Singha not only constructed the tank but also built three wonderful temples around it. The tank was built in 1697 while the temples were completed by 1698. The three temples are as follows:

  • Shivadol Temple
  • Joydol Temple
  • Deviol Temple
All the three temples are considered sacred and visited by thousands of pilgrims every year. The Jaysagar Tank is believed to be the biggest man made lake in the country. Located at the edge of the Sibsagar Town, the tank is a major tourists attraction. Near the Jaysagar Tank and Temples is the Ahom Museum. This Museum boasts of precious artifacts of the Ahom rulers. It displays clothes, swords, goblets, manuscripts and platters of yesteryear. If you visit Shibsagar then you cannot avoid a visit to the Jaysagar Tank and Temples.
