The
Maibong region is historically renowned as the old capital of the kingdom of the
Kachari rulers. It is presently the regional headquarters of the district of
North Cachar Hills. The small town of Maibong is surrounded by hills and has its own natural beauty.
Maibong is located at a distance of 338 kilometers from the city of
Guwahati. The region is easily accessible from the city center as it is connected by roads and railway routes. Maibong is watered by the
river Mahur. On the eastern bank of the river, lie the remnants of the old city of Maibong, which was the seat of administration of the Kachari kings from the mid 16th century to the mid 18th century. The capital was fortified on all its sides and blocks were created segmenting the area with bricks. The stone carvings and the sculptures of the kingdom are preserved in the museum in the district of
Haflong. The chief attraction of Maibong is the monumental temple known as the
Ramchandi Temple. It was constructed in the year 1761. The temple has a two-roofed temple structure.

The closest cities to the town of Maibong are Haflong, which lies at a distance of 47 kilometers and Silchar that lies at a distance of 131 kilometers from Maibong.
