Majuli


Majuli is a unique kind of place that attracts loads of tourists from all over the country. It is the world's biggest river island and a matter of pride for the state of Assam. The wonderful place of Majuli is a sub division of Jorhat District of Assam. The famous tourist attraction, Majuli, is situated at a distance of twenty kilometers from the Jorhat town.

The island of Majuli initially covered an area of one thousand two hundred and fifty square kilometers. At present, the total area of the island is six hundred and fifty square kilometers. Majuli is a hot favorite for all the nature lovers out there. It is a fresh water island and a unique place that is pollution free.

The island of Majuli has a longish shape with a length of ninety kilometers in the east-west direction. In the north-south direction, the island extends upto sixteen kilometers. It is a place that is covered with water on all the sides. This attracts a wide variety of beautiful birds. Along with a large number of local birds, beautiful migratory birds also throng the lovely island of Majuli.

Majuli is a place not only rich in its beauty but also in its culture and tradition. There are about twenty-five to twenty-six satras in the island of Majuli. Out of these the satras that are worth mentioning are:

  • Auniati
  • Garmur
  • Kamalabari
These satras practice and propagate the philosophy and principles of the great Vaisnavite saints, Madhavdeva and Sankardeva. These great souls preached the Satria culture to the Assamese people.
