The state of Maharashta is located on the western coast of India. Its capital Mumbai is the financial capital of the nation and also the largest city of India. The state covers a total area of 307,731 km2 and hence it is the third largest state of India. After India's independence the Indian National Congress (INC) has maintained a stronghold in the state. Political parties like Maharashtra Nav Nirman Sena and Shiv Sena have gradually gained popularity in the state. The 13th Assembly elections for Maharashtra will be held on 13th October 2009 for which a figure of 7, 56, 34,525 voter turnout is expected. The state has a total count of 288 constituencies. The State government has pulled up its socks to ensure free and fair elections.

2004 Assembly elections result

For the 2004 Assembly elections there were as many as 2678 contestants in fray. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won the maximum number of seats followed by the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
