Government Museum in Bangalore was established in 1865. This multipurpose museum's is situated at the Kasturba Road. The main attraction of the Government Museum is the tools and implements that belong to the Old Stone Age. The museum also preserves antiques that date back to the ancient civilization of Harappa and Mohenjodaro.
This museum of Karnataka is a house of artifacts that are collected and preserved from almost every corner of India. The collection of sculptures and paintings is very rich. The painting gallery includes beautiful and rare paintings in Mysore and Tanjore style and also paintings from Rajasthani and Pahari schools. Among the other artifacts on display, ivory carvings, inlay work, sandal-wood caskets are highly appreciated. The arms and armory of the ancient days are also put on exhibit in the Government Museum.
The museum also houses terracotta works from West Bengal, sculpture from the Nolamba, Hoysala, Chola, Chalukya, Pala and Gandhara periods. Other than the traditional paintings and work of art, the Government Museum also possess contemporary and modern paintings and works of plaster of Paris.
The Government Museum in Bangalore, is opened to the visitors on all days except Monday, second Saturday and other holidays declared by the Government of Karnataka. The timing to visit this museum is from 10 am to 5 pm.
